What the case involves
A filling restores a tooth affected by decay or with a broken older filling. The student removes the affected tissue and rebuilds the tooth so it regains its shape and function.
In a teaching clinic a filling usually takes longer than the same procedure in a private practice. That is a matter of process rather than quality: each step is checked by a supervising teacher before the work continues.
How it works at the faculty
The student books the visit at the clinic of the faculty where they study. Before any work begins, the supervising teacher reviews the case and decides whether it suits that particular clinical exercise, and approves the key stages.
The examination may show that the tooth needs different treatment — a root canal, for instance — and that the case does not match the exercise the student is looking for. That is a normal part of the process, not a rejection.
What a student may be looking for
- Decay that has not yet reached the nerve
- An older filling that has broken or fallen out
- A tooth that is not in constant pain and is not an emergency
- A patient who can attend on a weekday within the teaching timetable

- How many visits might a filling take?
- It depends on the tooth and on how the exercise is organised. Sometimes one visit is enough, sometimes two are needed. The student can tell you more once they have seen the case.
- Can I choose which tooth is treated?
- You can describe what is bothering you, but which tooth is treated — and whether the case suits that exercise — is decided at the faculty after an examination.
