Fillings are the case students look for most — a large number are required during training, so your chances of finding a student for one are better than for complex procedures. A single visit is usually enough, but it runs longer than in a private practice.
What happens
The decayed tissue is removed and the tooth is rebuilt with a material that restores its shape and function. The aim is to stop the decay progressing and return the tooth to normal use.
Why it takes longer
Not because the work is worse, but because it is supervised: the teacher checks the key stages before the student continues. The student also works more slowly, because they are learning. Expect a longer appointment than you are used to.
When a filling is not enough
If decay has reached the nerve, a filling alone does not solve it — that is root canal treatment. If the tooth is badly broken down, a crown may be needed. In both cases the case simply belongs to a different category; it is not a rejection.
What helps a case be accepted
- A tooth that is not in constant pain and is not an emergency.
- Willingness to attend on a weekday, within the teaching timetable.
- A clear description of which tooth is troubling you, and since when.
