I haven't been to a dentist in years

People rarely put it off because of pain. They put it off expecting to be told off, fearing the bill, or dreading what they will hear. A first visit after a gap is an examination — a look, and a conversation about what could be done and in what order. Not everything is decided at once.
Nobody is keeping score of how long it has been
The student you are seeing is learning and needs patients. Your case is valuable to them exactly as it is. A long gap is not unusual and is not an invitation for a lecture.
What happens at the first visit
The teeth and gums are examined, usually with an X-ray, and what is there is discussed. The point of that visit is to build a picture, not to do everything in one go.
It does not all have to happen at once
If there are several things to do, they are ordered by urgency — what hurts or is deteriorating first, the rest after. A plan can spread across months. That is a normal approach, not a concession.
If you are anxious
Say so. It is not a weakness and it is not rare. A student has more time than a busy private practice, and can go slower, explain what they are doing, and stop if you need a break. Agree a signal in advance — a raised hand is enough.
What to do next
- Start with an examination, not with a decision about treatment.
- Say up front if you feel anxious — it changes the pace.
- Do not wait for pain before going back.
